I’ve told myself I’m scared of failing. But I’m not. I’ve survived 100% of my worst days, my biggest mistakes, my unprecedented failures.
What’s real? What’s honest is, I was scared of how big this could actually get.
I recently sat down to journal the night before a conversation that could change everything. What terrified me was not rejection. It was the potential yes. The size of what I is truly capable of.
Here is what showed up in my journal, and what I tell every leader who freezes at the edge of their next level. The fear is not the problem. The force you use to look brave is the problem. That force has a cost, and it shows up as friction more often than not. These three things, counterintuitively, create flow where their was once force and friction.
• We name the real fear.
• We drop the force.
• We commit to what’s actually true.
The Fear Is Not of Failing
Name the real fear. I was not afraid I would let anyone down. I had zero evidence of that. I was afraid of how good I already am, and of what saying yes would ask of me. That is the fear of the bigger game, and most leaders never admit to it. They call it caution. It is not caution. It is the exposure that arrives the moment you finally get seen at full size. Look right at it.
We like to think that “facing our fears” is overcoming them with some kind of will or force. It is actually just acknowledging the simplicity of what scares you and saying it out loud.
Force Wears the Mask of Brave
Underneath brave is force. Underneath force is friction. When you grip harder to look ready, you manufacture the exact drag that makes the thing feel hard. I kept running the math, trying to logic my way to certainty. It never added up, because fear does not answer to logic. The moment I stopped forcing and let the feeling move all the way through, the tightness left my body. I called it unbound. Flow replaced friction, and the path got clear.
You Are the Common Denominator
When you look at the room you’re stepping into and realize every person at that table is there because of you, that is not ego. That is evidence.
The plan is mine. The capacity is mine. The reason the opportunity exists at all is mine. It was so emotional for me to admit that to myself out loud, without judgement.
When you stop waiting to be recognized and start choosing your way in, the entire equation shifts in your favor. You already carry everything this moment requires. Step into it so you can step up!
Force wears the mask of brave. Drop the mask, and the thing you feared becomes easy.
So What’s the Point?
The fear before the big yes is not a stop sign. It is force. Drop the force, and alignment turns the hard thing easy.
Your Next EASIEST Step
Open your journal tonight. Name one place you have mistaken force for progress. Then ask one question:
What would this look like if it were easy?
Write the answer as if it is already true. That is your first aligned move.
