You have been waiting for someone to notice. The raise. The role.
The weight you carry that nobody asked you to pick up. It has not happened. So you built a story about why. That story is not true. It is just unverified. And it is running your leadership.
A leader I work with carried a story for over a decade. He believed he had missed his one shot at a bigger role. He believed leadership looked at him and decided he was not the guy. Nobody ever said that to him. Not once. He built the whole thing out of silence, then lived inside it, and let it color every meeting he walked into after that.
Silence Writes The Story For You
Your brain will not sit in an open loop. When feedback goes missing, you fill the gap yourself with something of your own creation. You do not fill it with something generous. You fill it with the worst available version. I can’t tell you how many leaders I’ve worked with that created a verdict for years about a moment nobody else even remembered the same way. They never asked. So the story hardened into fact. Silence does not protect you.
As a matter of fact, it amazes me to this day when I simply share with others that even in the act of reading this blog, you and I are living two extremely experiences.
Nobody Is Reading Your Mind
The people closest to you know you the least accurately. They know the version of you from ten years ago. They are busy solving problems you cannot see. Their silence is rarely a verdict on your worth, and more likely an issue of bandwidth. Your brain is an efficiency machine and unfortunately it takes a lot of energy to keep it up to date, including its image of who you are. You keep waiting for them to notice your good deeds and things left unsaid. This is failed strategy!
Nothing Needs To Be Done. It Needs To Be Said.
Here is what makes this easier than you think. You are not asking anyone to fix anything. Open with that: “I do not need you to do anything. I do need to say this”.
Then say it. The pressure drops the second the words leave your body. You have rehearsed it a hundred times. Now you deliver it once, out loud, and take your energy back.
“Most of the time, nothing needs to be done. It only needs to be said.”
There are more people walking around with this inside them than you could ever know.
Most leaders I advise are not stuck on a skill. They are stuck on one sentence they have never said to the one person who needs to hear it. It’s costing you years of joy that you’ll never get back.
So What’s the Point?
Every story you refuse to verify becomes the truth you lead from. Ask the question. Take your energy back.
Your Next EASIEST Step
Name one story you have never verified. Write the single question that would settle it.
Then find the low stakes moment this week to ask it out loud. One question. One conversation. Nothing more.
That one, right there, in front of your brain, right now. Have that conversation.
