You think you have a discipline problem.
You don’t. You have a quitting problem. Right when the work starts to actually count, you fold. You call it strategy. You call it pivoting. You call it being smart. It’s not. It’s quitting. And it’s costing you the life you say you want.
Build on the Cards You Were Dealt
Gord tore his MCL two days before walking on at Oregon State. He showed up to tryouts anyway. He still lifts with a brace on that knee. He never got the surgery that fixes the story. He got the version where he works around it. That is what aligned leaders do. You do not get the body you want. You get the one you have. Build the life that body can lead. From here.
Your Systems Are Your Freedom
Gord runs a rental car business. He told one of his managers the KPI is the number of times he calls Gord to ask a question. If the answer is in the manual, it comes out of the bonus. That is a leader. SOPs are not bureaucracy. They are your decisions on paper. Write your standards down once. Hand them to your people. Buy back your time. Reinvest it in your family, your body, your next move.
Stay in the Game One More Round
In our conversation on Alignment First a lemonade stand with my son was the proxy in which my son made his money back in 90 minutes. Then the “yeses” stopped. He wanted to pack it up. I told him, “I don’t know if we hit your number today. What I do know is we are guaranteed not to hit it if we leave.” Two hours later, he hit his goal. You are not behind. You are mid-round. The next yes is already coming. Stand there until it shows up. It belongs to you.
SO WHAT’S THE POINT?
You are not undisciplined. People tend to quit too early. Aligned leaders stay in the game one round longer than the next person.
YOUR NEXT EASIEST STEP
Pick one thing you almost quit this year. Open your notebook. Write down what you would have built by now if you had stayed in the game four more weeks.
Read it back. That is the version of you waiting on the other side of one more round.
Alignment First. Progress Always.
