I Spent Twenty Years Trying To Outrun One Mistake.

I got kicked out of school for cheating on a test. Scholarship athlete, honor code violation, silver spoon pulled clean out of my mouth. Then I spent the next twenty years trying to become so successful (in my own mind) that the story would become irrelevant. It never stopped mattering. Not until I stopped running from it.

A leader in workshop asked me to explain the RELEASE phase of the work I do. So I told her the truth instead of the framework. Release is not a concept for me. It is the thing that took two decades to do and about ten seconds once I finally chose it.

Here is what nobody tells you about carrying a story like that. It does not feel like carrying.

It feels like ambition. It feels like drive. It looks exactly like the thing every person around you congratulates you for. That is the trap, and that is why it lasts twenty years instead of twenty minutes. I was not building a career all that time. I was building an argument.

I was the judge, jury and executioner.

Chasing Credentials Is Force Wearing A Resume

Every degree. Every title. Every certification. I told myself I was building. I was outrunning. There is a difference, and your body knows it long before your calendar does. Force always looks productive from the outside, which is exactly what makes it so hard to catch in yourself. I am a recovering credential chaser. The recovery started the day I admitted what I was actually running from.

The Hardest Part Is Letting Go

Anchor is simple. Sit still long enough to see where the work is.

Understand is fascinating. Everybody enjoys learning about themselves.

Release is where people stop cold. Because release asks you to take off the suit of armor your identity was built on, and you have no idea who you are without it. That uncertainty is not danger. That uncertainty is the doorway.

Aligned action is walking through it.

What You Release Sets You Free

The moment I let that story go, I stopped forcing and came back to flow. Nothing outside of me changed. The record still says exactly what it says. What changed is I stopped paying interest on a debt I already paid. Whatever you are carrying to prove something to someone who stopped watching years ago, you are allowed to set it down. It was never the price of admission.

I stopped forcing and came back to flow. Nothing changed except what I was willing to carry.

So What’s the Point?

You are not behind. You are carrying something you were allowed to put down a long time ago.

Your Next EASIEST Step

Write one sentence. What am I still trying to prove, and to whom? Do not fix it. Do not solve it. Read it back to yourself one time. Naming the thing is where release begins.
