How Letting Go Creates Space for What’s Next

Sometimes, the hardest part of leadership isn’t building; it’s releasing. Whether it’s a business, a role, or an identity you’ve outgrown, holding on too long can keep you from the next level of growth. In my full-circle conversation with Gina Catalano, fractional COO and author of Tandem Leadership, we explored the power of letting go to create alignment between your life and your work.

1. Growth Requires Shedding Old Skin

Leaders love momentum, but momentum without alignment leads to burnout. Gina shared how every reinvention in her life came after she released something that once defined her. The same holds true for me. Closing my gym after thirteen years wasn’t failure; it was evolution. You can’t step into who you’re becoming while clinging to who you’ve been.

2. Freedom Is the Goal—Not “More”

Entrepreneurs often start businesses for freedom but end up trapped by their own creation. Gina’s reminder hit home: if your work prevents you from living the life you want, you’ve built another job, not a business. True success means creating space: to watch your kids play in the rain, to rest, to think, and to choose where your energy goes next.

3. Harmony Beats Balance

We chase “work-life balance” like it’s a destination, but balance is exhausting. Harmony is the real target. Making intentional choices that align your seasons of push with seasons of pause. When everything is rooted in purpose, imbalance becomes temporary, and harmony becomes sustainable.

So What’s the Point:

You can’t scale your business or your life if you’re still gripping what no longer serves you.

Your Next EASIEST Step:

Take ten minutes today to audit what you’re holding onto that’s keeping you from your next chapter; projects, roles, expectations, or even relationships. Write them down. Circle one that no longer aligns with your purpose and take a single step toward letting it go.
